Barkur Basadi

Advertisements

Barkur Basadi is a best place for anyone seeking a glimpse of history and cultural heritage of coastal Karnataka. This ancient Jain temple, nestled amidst the lush greenery of Barkur, a small town in Udupi District, Karnataka, India. Barkur served as the capital of the Alupa Kings and a regional stronghold of the Vijayanagara Empire, before falling under the rule of the Keladi Nayaks, Tipu Sultan, and eventually the British.

Basadis are typically built in the Dravidian architectural style that features dark granite exteriors, spacious courtyards, and intricate carvings. The word “basadi” (ಬಸದಿ) is a Kannada word derived from the Sanskrit word “basati, meaning “to reside” or “to dwell”. This refers to Jain temples and reflects Jain belief that basadis are not just places of worship, but also sacred places where the Tirthankaras reside and impart their spiritual teachings.

Barkur Basadi, also known as Kathale Basadi (Kathale (ಕತ್ತಲೆ) means dark in Kannada), was built with dark black granite and gives the temple dark impressions. It is believed to have been built by the Alupas dynasty between the 8th and 12th century. The Kathale Basadi complex comprises three relatively small, enclosed temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and a Jain Tirthankara, each with a single entrance that allows a single beam of light to illuminate the interior. The temples are no longer active for worship, but their stone walls and carvings still speak of history.
