If you’re in Madrid and looking for a day trip filled with history and breathtaking views, Ávila is the perfect destination. A day trip to Ávila from Madrid feels like stepping into a medieval storybook. Just over an hour’s journey away, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its remarkable city walls, stunning churches, and rich history. Ávila’s well-preserved medieval architecture and charming old town offer a captivating blend of history and culture that will enchant any traveler.
We started at the impressive City Walls of Ávila, which surround the old town and offer breathtaking views. After walking along the ramparts for a bit, we sat on a bench to enjoy the colorful city below. Next, we headed to the Basilica de San Vicente, a beautiful mix of Gothic and Romanesque styles, and explored the charming cobblestone streets around the basilica, soaking in the atmosphere.
After that, we entered Puerto San Vicente, the historic main gate of Ávila, and made our way to Plaza del Mercado Chico, the lively heart of the city. Along the way, we saw several historical sights, like the Palacio de los Velayos, Iglesia de San Nicolás, and Torre del Reloj. Despite the rain and gloomy, cold weather, we were welcomed by the vibrant atmosphere of the plaza, filled with charming cafés and shops—a perfect place to relax and enjoy a local treat.
Despite the persistent rain, we followed our guide to the Church and Birthplace of Saint Teresa of Jesus, a prominent 16th-century mystic and reformer within the Catholic Church. This site serves as a pilgrimage destination for Catholics. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to visit the Cathedral of Ávila because of the chilly rain. After we got back on the bus, we briefly stopped at a scenic viewpoint to capture the picturesque beauty of Ávila. Although the weather hindered our photo opportunities, the charm of the city remained undeniable.
We took a guided tour bus from Madrid to Ávila and Segovia on June 18, 2024, and had an amazing time! Our enthusiastic guide shared interesting stories about the city’s history, making every moment memorable, from the impressive city walls to the beautiful basilica.
