Diamond Beach is one of those places that doesn’t feel real until you actually stand there. If Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is the crown jewel of Iceland, Diamond beach is the stretch of black sand (Breiðamerkursandur) where the icebergs meet the crashing Atlantic waves at the end of their journey.
While the lagoon is all about serenity and scale, the beach is about contrast and texture. Located just across the bridge, this volcanic shoreline is where floating ice finally meets the powerful Atlantic tide and gets washed back onto the sand.
When the sun hits them, they sparkle like diamonds, which is exactly how the beach got its name. Depending on the day and the light, the ice looks different every time you visit. Some are crystal clear, some glow blue, and they come in every shape that looks like shing sculptures. They all just sit there while the sunlight hits them and the waves crash around them, creating an incredible contrast between the sparkling ice and the dark sand.
Take a look at the slideshow below to see how the ‘diamonds’ looked during our visit on June 20, 2025.
We also spent time at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, including a boat ride on the lagoon. If you’re planning a visit, be sure to check out our full Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon guide for the boat tour experience, travel tips, and helpful visitor information.
Conclusion
Watching these ancient pieces of ice slowly melt into the ocean is a powerful reminder of how constantly this landscape is changing. It was a mix of emotions as we saw huge chunks break off the glacier with a loud splash, then slowly float away and disappear into the sea. Even though we weren’t here for long, it was one of the most surreal things we saw along the coast. There’s something magical about the light and water here that’s hard to put into words.
