Whether exploring the historic railroad bridge, taking a relaxed stroll along the shoreline, kayaking through the serene mangrove tunnels, swimming in the shallows, simply soaking up the sun-drenched scenery, boating in the crystal-clear waters, or picnicking under swaying palm trees, Bahia Honda offers a perfect slice of tropical bliss. Nested in the heart of the Florida Keys this state park offers diverse landscapes from sandy beaches to mangrove swamps and tropical hardwood hammocks.
But Bahia Honda is more than just stunning views; it holds a rich past. Once a remote island, it underwent a remarkable transformation thanks to Henry Flagler’s railroad. Today, the historic Old Bahia Honda Bridge trail, a remnant of this era, invites visitors on a walk through time, revealing breathtaking panoramas that bridge the gap between history and natural beauty. The bridge, also known as the Broken Bridge, once linking Bahia Honda Key and Spanish Harbor Key, stands damaged by the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane. Now a symbol of history and nature’s power.
These photos were taken during a brief stop at the state park on the evening of April 21, 2024, en route to Key West from Miami, Florida.
