Discover the Alcázar of Seville: A UNESCO World Heritage Gem

If you are visiting Seville and looking to explore a piece of history, the Alcázar of Seville is a great place to visit. The Alcázar of Seville is one of Spain’s most iconic landmarks, blending Moorish, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Christian architectural styles. It has also gained fame as the stunning backdrop for the fictional kingdom of Dorne in Game of Thrones. Just a short walk from the city center, this UNESCO World Heritage site is framed by the Seville Cathedral and its towering Giralda bell tower, with charming historic buildings surrounding the area.

We walked from Plaza de España to Alcázar, stopping at the Torre del Oro along the way—a 25–30-minute stroll through Seville’s charming streets on a sunny, humid day. Without advance tickets, we arrived around 2 PM to find a long line at the counter. After waiting over half an hour, we were relieved to get a 4 PM slot. With an hour to spare, we visited the Setas de Sevilla, just a 15-minute walk away, before returning to the Alcázar in time to enter.

Our visit to the Alcázar began at the imposing Puerta del León, the main entrance to the Alcázar where our QR code voucher was scanned, and we were permitted entry at our designated 4 PM time slot. After passing through, we entered the vast and colorful Patio de la Montería, a beautifully designed courtyard historically associated with royal hunting parties.

One of the first areas we explored was the Patio de las Doncellas (Courtyard of the Maidens), a stunning courtyard known for its detailed Mudejar tilework and elegant, symmetrical design. While it was difficult to get a good photo with so many people around, the beauty of the space was undeniable. The Patio de las Doncellas leads into the impressive Salón de Embajadores (Ambassadors Hall) with its golden ceilings, and the charming Patio de las Muñecas (Courtyard of the Dolls). Both spaces showcase the exquisite blend of architecture and design that the Alcázar is renowned for. It’s no wonder the Spanish royal family continues to use these spaces during their visits to Seville.

After the palace, we wanted to explore Alcázar’s expansive gardens, a beautiful retreat that spans several levels, but we skipped the stroll due to the overwhelming crowds and only managed a few glimpses.

We had an incredible time exploring the Alcázar on June 17, 2024, and in this post, I’ll share some essential facts, helpful tips, and stunning photos to inspire your own visit to this majestic landmark.
