If you’re staying in Madrid and have a day to spare, Seville makes for a perfect escape. Just a few hours away by high-speed train, Seville is an enchanting city brimming with history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture. Our journey began early in the morning at Madrid’s Atocha Station, where we boarded a 9 am Renfe AVE train that took us away to the heart of Andalusia.
Here’s a glimpse of our Seville adventure—from the moment we stepped off the train on a sunny, hot, and humid day, to our return later that evening.
Train Ride from Madrid to Seville: Fast, Comfortable, and Scenic
The ride from Madrid to Seville is just under 2.5 hours, and it’s a comfortable and scenic journey. The high-speed AVE train offers large windows, so we had plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy the views of the Spanish countryside, speeding past olive groves and sun-kissed landscapes. Before we knew it, we were arriving at Seville’s Santa Justa station, feeling excited for a full day of exploration.
Our First Stop: Plaza de América – A Tranquil Gem in Parque de María Luisa
Upon arriving at the train station, we opted for an Uber to kick off our day. Our driver, a warm and friendly lady, greeted us with a smile. The short ride to Parque de María Luisa took about 10 minutes and cost around $8. The park’s stunning Plaza de América, with its Moorish architecture and tranquil reflecting pool, was the perfect introduction to Seville.
Plaza de España: A Magnificent Masterpiece
From the park, we took a 10-minute walk through the lush gardens and vibrant flowers to one of Seville’s most iconic landmarks: Plaza de España. The semicircular building, decorated with colorful tiles representing Spain’s provinces, overlooks beautiful gardens and a canal. We spent some time wandering around, soaking in the details and snapping photos—definitely a photographer’s paradise! Check out my post Plaza de España and a complete travel guide for more details and pictures.
Torre del Oro: A Glimpse of Seville’s Past
We took a 20-minute stroll, admiring the charming buildings along the way, until we reached the Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold). Built in the 13th century as part of Seville’s defense, it once served as a watchtower and now houses a small naval museum. While we didn’t go inside, we snapped a few photos of this iconic landmark. Afterward, we took a quick snack and restroom break at a nearby McDonald’s before continuing our exploration.
La Giralda: A Beautiful Blend of Cultures
We headed to La Giralda, the famous bell tower that was once a minaret, just a short 10-minute walk away. A beautiful mix of Islamic and Christian styles, it’s a true reflection of Seville’s rich history. Although we didn’t climb to the top, we enjoyed admiring the tower’s architecture. Capturing its beauty in photos proved challenging, with the bright sun, height, and crowds around the complex.
Seville Cathedral: A Majestic Gothic Masterpiece
We didn’t go inside the Seville Cathedral (entry is allowed, by the way), but instead, we enjoyed the lively surroundings. With its colorful buildings, horse-drawn carriages clip clopping on the cobblestone streets, and trams glided by, the area was full of life. The energetic crowd, cafés, and restaurants made it the perfect spot to relax, sip a café con leche, and enjoy some tapas.
Seville’s Stunning Squares: The Setas of Seville
With an hour to spare before the Alcázar, we took a 15-minute stroll through narrow, cobblestone streets lined with shops to the Setas de Sevilla. This mushroom-shaped structure offers a striking contrast to Seville’s historic buildings. To beat the humidity, we grabbed a refreshing mango-pineapple smoothie, the perfect pick-me-up.
Alcázar of Seville: A Majestic Palace
After our visit to the Setas de Sevilla, we made our way back to the Alcázar just in time for our 4pm time slot. No trip to Seville is complete without visiting the Royal Palace of Seville. This UNESCO World Heritage site, the Alcázar is a stunning example of Moorish architecture, featuring intricately designed courtyards, lush gardens, and ornate halls. We spent nearly an hour exploring its beauty before rushing back to the train station to catch our 6 p.m. train to Madrid, completing our unforgettable Seville adventure. Be sure to read my full post on the Alcazar of Seville and its key highlights.
