If you’re looking for a stunning outdoor adventure in the Outer Banks, Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head is a must-visit! This iconic park is home to some of the tallest sand dunes on the East Coast and offers a variety of activities for all ages. Whether you’re hiking, flying kites, or just soaking in the breathtaking views, there’s something for everyone at Jockey’s Ridge.
The dunes here rise as high as 100 feet in some places, making it one of the most impressive natural landscapes around. The park spans over 400 acres, providing a perfect spot for both adventure seekers and those looking to relax in nature. As you explore the dunes, you’ll be surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the wind shifting the sand and the rustling of coastal grasses. The views of the sound and the Atlantic Ocean are absolutely stunning, especially at sunrise or sunset, when the dunes are bathed in warm, golden light.
When we visited on New Year’s Day 2025, it was chilly and windy, and we could literally feel the sand blowing against our faces. Despite the cold, the morning visit was beautiful and peaceful, and we captured some amazing snaps along the way. Here are some of our favorite moments from that day!
