If you ever find yourself in the Outer Banks, definitely check out the Wright Brothers National Memorial. It’s the spot where the first powered flight happened back in 1903—a huge moment in aviation history. The memorial is set in this wide-open space with nothing blocking the view, which really gives you a sense of freedom. It’s easy to imagine the excitement and possibility the Wright brothers must have felt when they took off for the first time.
We visited on January 1st, 2025—and honestly, what better way to kick off the New Year than standing where aviation history began? As soon as you walk in, you can’t help but say “Wow.” The huge granite monument on the hill really grabs your attention. Around it, there’s a replica of the Wright brothers’ garage, a museum, and the visitor center. A path loops around the whole site, so you can take your time and really soak it all in.
It was cold and windy when we visited, but the bright sun made everything feel sharp and clear as we walked around the monument. The view from the top of the hill is absolutely stunning—you can see the dunes, the coastline, and the same landscape the Wright brothers once looked out on. The monument rises above it all, standing tall as a reminder of their incredible achievement.
As we walked around the monument, we could see replicas of the Wright brothers’ 1903 Flyer, the Flight Line, their garage, and the museum—all laid out below from the hilltop. After soaking in the view, we headed down to get a closer look at everything. The most powerful moment, though, was standing on the exact spot where they took off for the very first time on December 17, 1903. It’s honestly humbling. Just a few seconds in the air—but it changed everything. It’s wild to think how much of the world we know today started right there in that wide, open field.
As we followed the path, we passed a replica of the Wright brothers’ garage—the place where it all started. It gives you a real sense of their humble beginnings. We walked along the flight line, where stones mark the distances of each of their historic flights. We ended our visit at the museum and visitor center, which added even more depth to their incredible story.
Even with the chilly weather, the peaceful vibe and beautiful views made it such a special way to start 2025. We took our time wandering around, soaking it all in, and snapping some amazing photos along the way. Here are a few of our favorite moments from that day!
