From the towering sand dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park to the birthplace of powered flight at the iconic Wright Brothers National Memorial, plus more historic lighthouses and piers, we were ready for another day full of adventure and unforgettable moments. Here’s a peek at our second day in the OBX, packed with scenic beauty and fascinating history.
Day 2: A Full Day of Nature, History, and Coastal Charm
A Thrilling Adventure at Jockey’s Ridge
We kicked off our second day early with a visit to Jockey’s Ridge State Park, arriving around 9 AM. It was a bit chilly and windy that morning, but the excitement of exploring kept us moving. This place is home to some of the tallest sand dunes on the East Coast, and there’s something for everyone—whether you’re hiking, flying kites, or just enjoying the amazing views.
We spent time climbing up and down the dunes, with the wind whipping sand on our faces. It was such a thrilling and refreshing experience – totally different from what we were used to. If you’re up for a unique outdoor adventure in the OBX, Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head is definitely worth a visit!

A Walk Above the Waves: Jennette’s Pier
After our thrilling time at Jockey’s Ridge, we headed to Jennette’s Pier, just a 10-minute drive south. Once we arrived, we spent some time watching fishermen reel in their catch, all while soaking in the laid-back coastal vibe. It was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the scenery. We also popped into the gift shop to grab a few souvenirs and some beach essentials before heading further south to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
A Natural Wonderland: Cape Hatteras National Seashore
After a 15-minute drive, we reached the stunning Bonner Bridge Pier, which is associated with Cape Hatteras National Seashore and managed by the National Park Service. It’s a fantastic spot for walking, sightseeing, spotting marine life, or just enjoying some fishing. We snapped some great photos of the bridge and took in the beauty of this iconic location.
Black and White Beauty: Bodie Island Lighthouse
After soaking in the views at Bonner Bridge, we headed back north for about 10 minutes to visit Bodie Island Lighthouse (National Park Service), another gem within Cape Hatteras National Seashore. This stunning black-and-white lighthouse stands tall and proud, offering incredible views of the marshlands and waters around it. It’s such a historic spot, and we really took our time soaking in its beauty and the peaceful vibe of the place.
A Humbling Finale: Wright Brothers National Memorial
Finally, we wrapped up our OBX adventure with a visit to the Wright Brothers National Memorial. It’s truly humbling to stand in the very place where aviation history was made. Learning about the Wright brothers’ first flight really made us appreciate the innovation and determination that unfolded right there on that sandy beach.
