If you’re a North Carolina local looking for a quick weekend escape, the Outer Banks (OBX) is a great pick. Between the sandy beaches, cool historic spots, charming small towns, and amazing local food, there’s something for everyone. Plus, no matter where you are in the state, it’s never too far of a drive.
Our weekend trip to the Outer Banks was a last-minute idea—we booked it just a week before New Year’s Eve. Luckily, since it was the off-season, we scored a great Airbnb. We’re so glad we picked OBX over other spots. It was under a 4-hour drive and turned out to be exactly what we needed: relaxing, a little adventurous, and full of amazing views and historic sites. Here’s a peek at our two-day getaway—short but packed with memories we won’t forget.
Day 1: A Day of Exploring and Sunset Views
We started our drive around 8 AM, excited for our OBX adventure. After a smooth 4-hour drive, we reached Duck town—our first stop—around noon.
Duck Town Boardwalk: The Perfect OBX Stroll
Duck is such a charming little town with a relaxed vibe. The Duck Boardwalk was the perfect place to stretch our legs and take in the peaceful surroundings. With cozy shops, gorgeous waterfront views, and plenty of spots to sit and relax, we found ourselves just soaking in the beauty of the place. Beach Driving at Corolla: OBX’s Wild Side
After eating lunch at the picnic area on the Duck Town Boardwalk and freshening up, we hit the road again, heading toward Corolla Beach—just a short 30-minute drive away. The drive was scenic with dunes, coastal views, and thick maritime shrubbery lining the route. Along the way, we passed beautiful homes, mostly Airbnbs and vacation rentals, each with its own charm. It made the drive feel like a little road trip of its own.
Even with a 4WD, we hesitated for a moment before driving onto the sand—but once we did, we were hooked. It was a whole new experience! We took turns cruising along the coastline, with the waves crashing on one side and rolling sand dunes on the other. We made sure not to get too close to the water, but the view was unforgettable.
It felt like an adventure we’d never forget. The beach was so wide and open, almost empty, with just a few tour vehicles, jeeps, and other cars scattered across the shore. It was an incredible sight.
Currituck Lighthouse & Corolla Park: History with a View
Just two miles away, after a fun ride on Corolla Beach, we visited the Currituck Lighthouse — a historic gem with breathtaking views of the coastline. The lighthouse stands tall and proud, offering a stunning perspective of the surrounding landscape and the ocean beyond. It’s a great spot for photos and soaking in the natural beauty of the area.
Next, we took a stroll through Historic Corolla Park, a peaceful and picturesque spot. The park’s well-kept grounds, serene maritime forest, and views of the sound made it feel like a hidden oasis. We walked the paths, sat by the gazebo, and just enjoyed the calm atmosphere. The park is also home to the Historic Whalehead Club, an iconic Art Nouveau mansion that adds a special touch to the area’s history.
The reflections of the bridge’s arches, the nearby boathouse, and the Currituck Lighthouse in the distance made the whole scene even more magical. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect after such an adventurous day!
Strolling Along Kitty Hawk Pier: A Seaside Escape
After soaking in the beauty of Historic Corolla Park, we headed toward Kitty Hawk Pier, about a 40-minute drive away. We arrived just before 4 PM and made our way all the way to the end of the pier, snapping some stunning photos of the ocean and coastline along the way.
Chasing Sunset Near the Wright Brothers Path
As the sun started to dip lower, we began searching for the best spot to catch the sunset. The closest place we could easily reach before it got too late was the open path near the Wright Brothers Multi-Use Path, just a quick 10-minute drive away. It turned out to be the perfect spot, with the sky turning golden as the day slowly came to an end.

To give you a clearer picture of the route we took around the Outer Banks, here’s a map of our journey—from the Duck Town Boardwalk, down to Corolla Beach for some fun beach driving, then to the Currituck Lighthouse and Historic Corolla Park. We continued on to Kitty Hawk Pier for a peaceful stroll and ended the day chasing the sunset. This guide is perfect for anyone looking to explore some of the OBX’s most scenic and historic spots in just a day.
Conclusion: Wrapping Up Day 1
After soaking in the beautiful sunset near the Wright Brothers Multi-Use Path, we headed to our Airbnb in Nags Head, just a short 10-minute drive away. The drive was peaceful as we reflected on the day’s unforgettable moments—stunning boardwalk strolls, thrilling beach drives, and the picturesque lighthouses.
If you go in the off-season like we did, you’ll almost have the beach to yourself—plus, easier parking and cheaper stays. Fewer crowds also mean you can explore at a slower pace and really soak in the peaceful OBX vibe.
We were ready to relax and recharge for Day 2, knowing we’d already packed in so much beauty and fun. With more exploration ahead, we were excited to see what the next day would bring!
